Hooray for Rio

The most beautiful megalopolis in the world deserves its moment. The big winner: Lula. Already a mythical figure to many, he will now be identified with Brazil's triumph. And since he won't be in charge when the Olympics actually happen, he won't be blamed for any mishaps.

President Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva of Brazil had led Rio’s emotional appeal to win the Games, and the urge to make history tugged at the I.O.C. He was among the tearful, raucous celebration in the auditorium when the announcement was made. Legendary soccer star Pele was jumping up and down while locked in an embrace, tears streaming down his face.

Video of the announcement here. You can catch Lula at the tail end.
This video is from Rio 2016's official homepage. Every country uses those words, but in Brazil they actually mean something. And that is why Beijing's thunder will be stolen much earlier than we might have ever had the right to expect.
