Bush Katrina'd Georgia

And yet Bush-McCain still get a free pass on foreign policy. Obama desperately needs a credible Democrat to make the case for their poor foreign policy judgment. Clark, Hamilton and others on our shortlist could make that case forcefully and devastatingly.

Unfortunately, the rumor mill suggests that Obama's choice will be Joseph Biden rather than a figure with foreign policy gravitas. Given that his other ones appear to be Bayh or Kaine rather than Gore or Kerry (or anyone in our far more attractive shortlist), one can almost be forgiven for looking even to Hillary as an alternative.

Obama may be on the verge of making the least exciting VP pick since Dole and Schweiker, and the least impressive since Ferraro and Quayle, thus giving McCain a chance to generate real excitement with his VP ticket should he for once behave like the maverick he once was. Let's hope we're wrong.
